Lucid Dreaming – Dreams of Clarity

چکیده

Although the concept of ‘lucid dreaming’ was fi rst coined by Frederik Willems van Eeden, a Dutch psychiatrist, and introduced at the meeting of The Society for Psychical Research held on 22 April 1913, the phenomenon of lucid dreaming was already known in earlier historical periods and its descriptions can be found in writings of Aristotle. However, modern lucid dreaming research was established only after LaBerge introduced his method for physiological investigation of lucid dreaming through eye signals in 1980. Current attempts in the fi eld are directed at defi ning the neuro-physiological correlates of lucid dreaming, an aim that still has yet to be achieved. One of the possible applications of lucid dreaming is in the fi eld of psychotherapy where it is usually used in treating nightmares. However, other possible therapeutic potentials of lucid dreaming are still in the process of being discovered and therefore constitute a fertile area for future researchers. Lucid dreaming incidence: A quality effects meta-analysis of 50years of research.

We report a quality effects meta-analysis on studies from the period 1966-2016 measuring either (a) lucid dreaming prevalence (one or more lucid dreams in a lifetime); (b) frequent lucid dreaming (one or more lucid dreams in a month) or both. A quality effects meta-analysis allows for the minimisation of the influence of study methodological quality on overall model estimates. Following sensiti...

Running title: tDCS effects on dream lucidity Testing the involvement of the prefrontal cortex in lucid dreaming: A tDCS study

Recent studies suggest that lucid dreaming (awareness of dreaming while dreaming) might be associated with increased brain activity over frontal regions during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. By applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), we aimed to manipulate the activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during REM sleep to induce lucid dreaming. Nineteen participa...

New perspectives for the study of lucid dreaming: From brain stimulation to philosophical theories of self-consciousness

Dreaming is often described as a state of cognitive deficiency characterized by a loss of self-reflection, orientational instability regarding persons, times, and places, deficient shortand long-term memory, and a lack of control over volition and attention (Hobson, Pace-Schott & Stickgold, 2000). On the neurophysiological level of description, a plausible correlate of such cognitive deficienci...

In the Theater of Dreams: Global Workspace Theory, Dreaming, and Consciousness

Utilizing the Global Workspace System of Baars (1988), this paper compares conscious and unconscious processes across waking, nonlucid, and lucid dreams. Sleep psychology can display gross functional dissociation between perceptual and cognitive consciousness. We utilize this observation to develop models of sleep experience and dream generation. These models accommodate Hunt’s (1989) “multipli...

Lucid Dreaming: Psychophysiological Studies of Consciousness during Rem Sleep

Although we are usually not explicitly aware that we are dreaming while we are dreaming, at times a remarkable exception occurs, and we become conscious enough to realize that fact. “Lucid” dreamers (the term derives from van Eeden, 19 13) report being able to remember the circumstances of waking life freely, to think clearly, and to act deliberately upon reflection, all while experiencing a dr...
